I am sick to the teeth of older members of society being appalled with this generation. It seems to me that many people view the young people of today as phone-zombies who will let down the human race. Well let me say now: we’re not.
Whilst in the past classical literature may have been a very important part of your knowledge and was taught substantially in schools, it isn’t the same today. Some classics are covered in English but I would suggest that most teens don’t have a complete knowledge of all classic novels. But when your grandma is shocked you can’t name a novel by Thomas Hardy, it does make you wonder if they understand your situation. You’ve never been taught about Thomas Hardy. When you go into bookshops, it’s modern authors who are at the front of the shelf. And whilst they might be able to recite the top writers of the 19th century, I doubt they know much about YA authors, YouTube stars and other modern-day media sensations.
In conclusion: we are not the stupid generation. Some of us do know our stuff when it comes to classic literature, but for those of us who don’t? It doesn’t matter.
